Wind in the dunes, sailboats on the water, a lighthouse on the horizon: Watching “Dr. Nice” gives you a pretty convincing idea of why so many people spend their vacations in Schleswig-Holstein. To coincide with the new season’s launch, TRAVELBOOK has followed the trail of the ZDF series to see where the most beautiful scenes were filmed. Of course, the heart of the series is about Dr. Moritz Neiss and the ups and downs of his life. Yet, the rugged coastal landscape of the Flensburg Fjord often steals the show.
The Flensburg Fjord–between Germany and Denmark
The bay in the far north of Schleswig-Holstein forms the natural border with Denmark. Its beaches, small coastal towns, and sailing areas shape the series’ backdrop. Just as one would wish for the north: maritime, relaxed, and with plenty of water views.
Around the fjord are historic cities like Flensburg on the German side and Sønderborg on the Danish side, with bathing bays, marinas, and small villages in between. The influence of both countries is felt in many places. Scandinavian flair is as much a part of the region as North German calmness.
Falshöft Lighthouse–the postcard motif of the fjord
No series set on the Baltic Sea would be complete without a lighthouse. The Falshöft Lighthouse near Pommerby frequently appears in “Dr. Nice” as one of the most famous landmarks of the Flensburg Fjord. The distinctive red-and-white tower (large photo above) embodies the maritime Schleswig-Holstein image that many viewers associate with the north.
Visitors can tour the lighthouse and enjoy views over the Flensburg Fjord toward Denmark. Those interested can even get married here. The lighthouse is one of the most photogenic spots on the fjord and has appeared in other ZDF productions such as “Der Landarzt” or “Da kommt Kalle.”

The “Hotel Ostseeschlösschen” really exists
Behind the fictional “Hotel Ostseeschlösschen” is the Boutique Hotel Wassersleben, located directly on the Flensburg Fjord. Here, Dr. Moritz Neiss takes up residence in a deluxe room with a balcony and water view. The best part: Unlike many film sets, the “Ostseeschlösschen” can be admired not just from the outside. Guests can actually check in and enjoy the same view frequently seen in the series.
The growing interest in the filming locations is already noticeable to the operators. Hotel owner Eicke Steinort said in a 2026 interview with the IHK Schleswig-Holstein that more and more visitors are coming to the region specifically because of “Dr. Nice.” Actor and location scout Mathias Harrebye-Brandt also sees potential for tourism in the series and has already suggested a filming location tour around Glücksburg.

However, we must dispel a small illusion at the end: Not everything in “Dr. Nice” that looks like Schleswig-Holstein is actually in the far north of Germany. For instance, the Förde-Klinikum Flensburg, where Moritz Neiss regularly clashes with his rival Dr. Florian Schmidtke, is actually located in Berlin. The hospital scenes are filmed at the Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin in the Biesdorf district.
Neiss’ country doctor practice is also not located at the Flensburg Fjord but in Brandenburg. The scenes were filmed in a historic cultural barn in the village of Kähnsdorf at the Großer Seddiner See. Many viewers might not notice the difference. This ultimately speaks to the series’ creators, who manage to create a believable North German world from various filming locations.
