Whether it’s a quick snack at a street food stand or an extended dinner in the evening, for many travelers, good food determines the success of a trip. The selection is vast, but some cities stand out for their culinary offerings. A U.S. food magazine has now named these places, providing plenty of inspiration for the next trip. TRAVELBOOK presents the winners.
Many people know the feeling: After a trip, one thing often remains in memory—the food. The U.S. magazine Food & Wine explored this sentiment and, as part of the “Global Tastemakers Awards,” named the 10 best cities in the world for food lovers.
The basis is a two-step process in which more than 400 international experts from fields such as gastronomy, travel journalism, and wine were surveyed. A panel of judges then evaluated the results and compiled the final list, which includes several European cities.
Overview
The Top 3 Best Cities for Food
Rank 1 – Hong Kong

The East Asian metropolis of Hong Kong tops the culinary list. The name translates to “Fragrant Harbor.” In the city, street markets meet skyscrapers and green parks—and it is also extremely diverse in culinary terms.
According to “Food & Wine,” the special appeal lies in the unique mix. In a small area, traditional Chinese cuisine and international influences come together. Simple dim sum eateries and Michelin-starred restaurants are often just steps apart. The street food scene is also an integral part, especially on night markets, with classics like wonton noodles, showcasing Hong Kong’s special charm as a food city.
Rank 2 – London

It’s long been known that London has more to offer than Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. The city ranks second and is now considered one of the most exciting food metropolises in Europe. One reason is the wide variety of influences from around the world. Indian, Caribbean, and Asian cuisines particularly shape the offerings.
According to the U.S. magazine, London is currently experiencing a new culinary renaissance. In addition to street food, modern restaurants play a significant role, especially in neighborhoods like Soho and Shoreditch.
Rank 3 – Tokyo

The Japanese capital Tokyo also secures a spot on the podium. The city is praised for its precision and is considered one of the most diverse food destinations in the world. High-quality ingredients, a strong focus on seasonality, and great attention to detail characterize the cuisine.
In restaurant districts like Shibuya and Shinjuku, travelers can try not only sushi but also classics like ramen, miso soup, or gyoza. The city’s culinary diversity is also evident in its markets. The Tsukiji Outer Market is particularly popular, offering mainly fresh street food. Meanwhile, the famous tuna auctions take place at the modern Toyosu Market.

This Is the Best Dish in the World
Also of interest: In addition to global restaurant rankings, the best dish in the world is named each year. In 2026, according to user reviews from “Taste Atlas,” “Vori vori,” a specialty from Paraguay, took the top spot. It is a hearty soup made from chicken, vegetables, and herbs, with small balls of cornmeal and cheese cooked in, creating a creamy consistency.
