If you’re planning a summer vacation in Ibiza, you might face unexpected challenges this year. The popular Balearic island is tightening its traffic regulations significantly—with noticeable effects for travelers. Rental cars, in particular, could become scarce and significantly more expensive.
Spain remains a favorite destination for German tourists, and Ibiza is among the most attractive islands. But according to BILD, stricter regulations are now in effect: Authorities have further reduced the number of vehicles allowed during peak season to decrease traffic and environmental impact.
As early as 2025, the number of cars was limited—now comes the next tightening. In the future, only 17,668 vehicles from tourists will be allowed on the island daily, including 14,000 rental cars. That’s about 2,500 fewer vehicles than last year.
New Rule Applies Throughout the Summer
The restrictions will be in effect from June 1 to September 30—right in the peak travel season. Providers with modern, low-emission vehicles will be given priority in the allocation of quotas.
For vacationers, this means primarily one thing: rising prices and significantly reduced availability of rental cars.

Industry Warns of Shortages
Experts anticipate noticeable impacts on travel planning. Those who wish to book a rental car at the last minute might find themselves out of luck—especially for larger vehicles for families or groups.
Thorsten Lehmann, CEO of rental car provider Sunny Cars, told BILD: “It is expected that larger vehicle categories, such as SUVs or minivans, will be particularly scarce, as there are generally fewer cars available in these categories, and they are likely to be snapped up quickly.”
Booking Early Will Be Crucial
Travelers are strongly advised to reserve their rental car as early as possible—ideally directly with their flight and accommodation. Spontaneous bookings could be challenging this summer.
If you can’t get a rental car, you’ll need to rely on alternatives. These include primarily public transportation and taxis. A ride from the airport to Ibiza Town costs between 19 and 22 euros, according to the portal “Ibiza Spotlight.”
The bus network connects many important places and beaches on the island. During the day, prices per ride are about two to four euros.
