Arriving in a foreign city after a flight often leads to unpleasant surprises with taxi fares. In Portugal’s capital, this is set to change–a new system at Lisbon Airport aims to combat taxi scams by implementing transparent fixed prices. This could be of interest to many travelers.
At Lisbon Airport, passengers have recently complained, according to a report by “Euronews,” about manipulated taxi meters, detours, and inflated prices. But this is now set to end. Lisbon’s tourism office wants to make the costs of taxi rides from Humberto Delgado Airport more transparent. An optional voucher system has been introduced to guarantee travelers fixed fares.
For trips within the Portuguese capital, the cost for up to four people, including luggage, ranges from 16 to 23 euros, depending on the time of day, day of the week, and destination area. If more than four passengers are transported within Lisbon, fixed prices between 20 and 28 euros apply.
Vouchers Available Directly at the Airport
The system is offered by Turismo de Lisboa (ATL). Travelers who wish to use the fixed price can purchase the corresponding voucher at the “Ask me Lisboa” tourism counter at the airport. Tourists then present the “Taxi Voucher” to the driver, and the ride is conducted at the already paid fixed price.

Long-Distance Destinations at Fixed Prices Too
The offer is not limited to destinations within the city limits. According to the tourism office, trips to locations outside of Lisbon are also possible at fixed rates. This even includes routes to the Algarve in southern Portugal. Prices for such a trip start at around 360 euros.
International Models for Greater Transparency
Comparable systems already exist at other airports. Belgrade is cited as an example, where voucher solutions for taxi rides are also offered. At other locations, government-set tariffs apply, such as at Rome-Fiumicino Airport.
The goal of the various models is the same: to prevent inflated taxi bills for arriving travelers.
