A city trip is especially worthwhile when you just want to get away and experience something new, but don’t have much time. The editorial team of “Time Out” has now published a ranking of the trendiest cities for a city trip in Europe 2026.
This City Is Particularly Worth a City Trip
As an absolutely worthwhile destination for a city trip, “Time Out” crowns Milan as the top destination. It is said to be Italy’s most stylish city. Although Milan is the country’s second-largest city, it can be easily explored in a few days. Many of the most famous sights are close to each other. You can visit the impressive Milan Cathedral or the old town on foot. If you’re short on time, you can also use the subway or tram to quickly travel between neighborhoods.
If you want to use the city trip for shopping, Milan is the right place. Many stores stay open later in the evening. You won’t be disappointed culinary-wise either. There are numerous restaurants, cafes, and snack bars offering Italian delicacies. You shouldn’t overlook smaller and perhaps inconspicuous shops—they often offer the best food!
Even the flight to Milan is a small highlight in good weather. Since the city is located beyond the Alps from Germany’s perspective, it offers a great panorama—provided you sit by the window on the right side of the plane.
In 2026, Milan will not only attract with its usual sights. Starting February 6, the city will host the 2026 Winter Olympics. The games will open at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium. If you love the Olympics and want to experience Milan from a completely different perspective, you should visit the city then.
Vienna and Trenčin in Second and Third Place
According to “Time Out,” Vienna ranks second among the best current travel destinations for a city trip in Europe. The Austrian capital is described as a “magical” destination worth visiting any time of year. In 2026, several anniversaries will attract visitors, such as the 250th anniversary of the Albertina Art Museum.
