On September 22, 2026, this year’s TRAVELBOOK Award was presented in Berlin. Each year, the new trend travel destinations for the following year are announced there. In the category of the most beautiful villages in Germany, Tüchersfeld in Franconian Switzerland made it into the top 5.

The small village of Tüchersfeld, covering 4.3 square kilometers, is considered a landmark of its region. Only 213 people live in the village, which is a district of the town of Pottenstein, about five kilometers away, in the Bavarian district of Bayreuth. Once an independent municipality, Tüchersfeld is the oldest settlement in the large municipality of Pottenstein, as its information page informs. Its documented history dates back to 1243, but the reason for its immense fame and status as a landmark goes back many millions of years, to the Jurassic period.
What makes Tüchersfeld so special?
Tüchersfeld looks as if it came straight out of a fairy tale book. Picturesque white half-timbered buildings dot the slope of a massive rock formation, whose imposing twin rock towers loom high above the village. Together, the picture-perfect buildings and fascinating rock spires create an impressive, almost surreal backdrop.
The striking rock castle Tüchersfeld, the landmark of Franconian Switzerland, consists of remnants of a reef that grew in a tropical sea during the Jurassic period. Many millions of years later, the Püttlach River further shaped the surroundings by cutting into the rock over millennia, creating the current meander mountain.

What can you experience in Tüchersfeld in Franconian Switzerland?
First of all, Tüchersfeld, with its impressive rock formations and its array of picture-perfect half-timbered houses, is a place to see and enjoy. A popular viewpoint for this is the Fahnenstein, which can be reached through a break in the rock.
A popular destination for visitors to Tüchersfeld is also the Franconian Switzerland Museum in the Judenhof near the summit of the rock towers. According to the Franconian Switzerland information page, it is the largest cultural history museum in the region. The museum explores topics around everyday culture, archaeology, Jewish history, and geology and includes, among other things, a fully preserved synagogue from 1764.
Hiking trails wind around the picturesque village through the surrounding nature of Franconian Switzerland. Guided hikes are also available locally.

For the first time this year, not only TRAVELBOOK readers but also BILD readers voted. In total, more than 150,000 votes were cast to determine the trend travel destinations for 2027.
