In Southeastern Europe lies the legendary Romania–famous for the legends surrounding the vampire Count Dracula. Although the story is fictional, it is loosely based on the historical Vlad III and has long been part of the national identity. Even today, the myth attracts countless visitors. And now Romania is taking it a step further: With “Dracula Land,” a new mega amusement park is set to open. TRAVELBOOK reveals what’s behind it.

When thinking of Romania, it’s hard to avoid the dark legend of Count Dracula–a tale so closely linked to the country like few others. Made famous by Bram Stoker’s novel, Dracula is one of the most iconic horror figures in literature. The character was inspired by the Wallachian prince Vlad, known as “Vlad the Impaler,” who was notorious in the 15th century for his gruesome methods of torture.

A major project is now directly tapping into this connection: Near the capital Bucharest, a massive theme park dedicated entirely to the Dracula myth is set to be built. “Dracula Land” is planned near the airport–covering about 780,000 square meters, which would make the park, according to its own claims, even larger than Europa-Park in Germany. Behind the venture is a private investor investing over one billion euros in the construction. The theme park is expected to open its doors as early as 2027.

What’s Planned for “Dracula Land”

According to the plans, the amusement park will include six immersive themed worlds–all centered around vampires and the story of Dracula. Planned are, among other things, a Dracula roller coaster, a replica of Bran Castle and the Carpathians, as well as more than 40 attractions. Some areas will also be inspired by famous metropolises such as London and New Orleans. But that’s not all: The site will also feature a luxury outlet for fashion and home decor, as well as a multifunctional arena for concerts and major events with space for over 22,500 visitors.

For guests, three hotel complexes will be built right next to the park: the Dracula Grand Hotel, the Dracula Family Hotel, and the Dracula Inn. Additionally, “Dracula Land” plans a large spa and thermal baths, as well as its own water park with more than 30 water attractions. The mega project is complemented by a 4.5-kilometer racetrack that will pass by the hotels, the theme park, and the outlet. On 15,000 square meters, a technology center with workspaces for startups in the fields of gaming, artificial intelligence, and the creative economy is also planned.

The investor emphasized during the project’s presentation that “Dracula Land” is intended to be much more than an ordinary amusement park. Rather, he sees the project as a symbol of Romania’s potential to create attractions of worldwide significance. At the same time, the park is expected to become a sustainable economic driver from which the country can benefit in the long term.

When Will the Park Open?

According to its own website, “Dracula Land” has been in the planning phase since 2024. Construction is expected to start this year or next. The opening is planned for 2027. However, further details about the project and construction are not yet available.

Other Attractions in Romania

Besides Dracula and dark legends, Romania has much more to offer. The country impresses with dense forests, a diverse wildlife, and many kilometers of untouched nature. This can be particularly well experienced on the approximately 1,600-kilometer long hiking trail Via Transilvanica, which traverses Romania from northeast to southwest. The relatively unknown city of Sibiu, also known as Hermannstadt, is still considered a real insider tip and offers a mix of culture, tradition, and romance. And the largest Christmas market in Europe is also located in Romania, specifically in Craiova, a city in the southwest of the country.
